My Story about Breast Implant Illness

Background

I decided to share my health journey and be transparent with my personal experience and healing from breast implant illness. Women out there might have similar symptoms, in pain, and struggling to find an answer to their multitude of symptoms. It all started back in 2008 when I started getting lethargic, having no energy, and feeling little or no motivation. I experienced chronic fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, and joint pain. Also, I had been suffering from cognitive dysfunction (brain fog), depression, mood swings, head and neck pain, cold hands, and feet. I went from being active and able to juggle many tasks, to struggling to complete a simple everyday task.

My annual physical exam turned up normal, and through the years, the symptoms got worse. I suspected it was just hormonal issues; after all, it is inevitable as I was getting older. Doctors had prescribed antidepressants and sleeping pills. Experiencing all of these debilitating symptoms, I felt I am slowly dying. I struggled to complete my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and later abandoned my pursuit. As the years progressed, I had to reduce my working days to relieve stress in hopes to improve the quality of my life but to no avail. I lost my zest for life!

My Treatment Journey

Upon a friend's recommendation, I went to a doctor who specializes in hormones in Carmel, CA, back in 2008. Since then, I have been a patient of a handful of integrative and naturopathic doctors. I have been diagnosed with insomnia, Hashimoto disease, hypothyroid, adrenal dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, and depression. Doctors prescribed custom-compounded bioidentical hormones (pills, patch, cream, suppository). I had taken countless of premium supplements, IV vitamin therapy,  along with endless and expensive blood work, and saliva tests. I endured painful hormone pellet, cervical cell biopsy but all these modalities only gave me temporary and mostly hormonal relief.

Unable to find the answers, I sought out traditional Chinese medicine and removed all dental amalgams and replaced them with porcelain. I was looking at all dimensions of treatments and long term healing; unfortunately, my symptoms for the unknown illnesses persisted for over ten years throughout every sort of multiple modalities I went through.

The "Aha!" Moment

Last year, after endless research for a cure, I was so grateful I came across a website called Healing Breast Implant Illness.  I joined their Fb group, along with Dr. Chun's support group and other helpful Fb groups. The amazing stories I had read and the photos shared by brave women helped me uncovered that my experience and health symptoms are one shared by hundreds of thousands of women with breast implants illness. It was at that moment when I connected the dots, and suddenly a light bulb brightened up. It was then that I truly believed that the root of my illness was my breast implants. Most of the symptoms I’m suffering from, generally refer to the condition as Breast Implant Illness (BII****). The signs and symptoms were all about my body and immune system response rejecting the breast implants.

Flashback

My 13-year old first breast implants ruptured, so I had my second set of saline breast implants replaced in 2013. Two years later, I ended up with painful grade-4 capsular contractures**. For years, I kept convincing myself and hoping that someday they would heal and soften along with the horrible symptoms would go away in time but to no avail. I finally made an appointment and had my explant and mastopexy surgery with Dr. Chun in Newport Beach CA, on July 3, 2019. I chose Dr. Chun because he is a very skilled surgeon in En Bloc/Total Capsulectomy*** and an expert microsurgeon.

Here are the Culprits

Here's what my intact submuscular saline implants look like after they've been removed. Posteriorly, Dr. Chun encountered double capsules because my last plastic surgeon left behind the old capsules at the time of reimplantation. Dr. Chun successfully removed the entire implant capsule complex in En Bloc*** fashion ~ it is an essential component of removing breast implants.

Society Definition Of Beauty Is Dangerous Especially for Women

FDA Proposes "Block-Box Warning"

Where is the plastic surgery line? Having a procedure to meet someone else expectations; someone else’s definition of beauty or makes someone else happy will never make you happy.

Yes, I did choose the implant, but I, too, had no clue that saline implants have silicone shells. I also had no clue that implants degrade over time as it releases toxins, and overwhelms my body, gets fatigued from fighting the implants that leads to multiple unknown symptoms.

My advice for cosmetically inclined, educate yourself and do your research, and seek board-certified plastic surgeons. Proactively investigate the ingredients you implant and injects into your body — the possible long-term health effects and adverse effects that could trigger an autoimmune response.

To date, the majority of people are not very well- informed about these potential risks, adverse effects, quantities of chemicals, and heavy metals released by breast implants. Data that were never disclosed and were kept hidden by plastic surgeons, manufacturers, and the FDA before breast implantation.

Aging is a natural process, and no surgery or procedure can reverse the aging process entirely.  Chasing youth ultimately ends in a losing battle.

We often forget that we are all part of nature - uniquely beautiful in our way. Accept yourself as the unique person that you are without comparing yourself to others.

Today, I am a happy woman and celebrating my freedom from toxic breast implants that were slowly killing me. As soon as the anesthesia wore off, I felt amazing! I know I'm going to regain my health and vitality back. I am happy

with my smaller breasts; it feels much lighter and so pleased with how they look. I am grateful to Dr. Chun and his friendly staff!

I went from intermittently bedridden to having lots of energy. My mental clarity improved, and my spirits bright. My body inflammation went down significantly because my digestions condition restored within three weeks of explant. I can honestly say that all of my symptoms are gone as my body continue to detox itself.  Click here to Read About Detoxification.

My breast implants illness, explant, and healing journey to where I am today, I felt a responsibility to help raise awareness about BII. I am sharing my story because so few women know the risks of breast implants and breast implant illness symptoms.

Body Positivity and Self Compassion

I accept that I did the best I could at the time with what I knew. I forgive myself, treat myself with kindness, respect, and much love from today forward.

I am comfortable embracing my smaller chest, and my breast cup size does not define my-self worth. I am now happier, healthier, empowered, beautiful, and authentic than I've ever been.

My breast implant illness experienced humbles me. I am grateful to God for my second chance at life and the opportunity to heal from the inside out. My scars are a beautiful reminder of what I had overcome. I wear them proudly as I move forward on being the best authentic version of myself that I can be.

Moreover, through my passion for caregiving, I would be able to help and guide women on their path to healing because caregiving is what I love and where I shine.

*Encapsulation:  Refers to the firm, generally avascular collagen shell deposited around a breast implant, isolating it from the host tissues. This body response was developed as a protective measure.

**Capsular Contracture:  Tightening of the tissue capsule around an implant, resulting in firmness or hardening of the breast and squeezing of the implant if severe.

***En Bloc and/or Total Capsulectomy: A surgical procedure when the surgeon removes the scar tissue or capsule and implant at the same time, with the implant still inside the intact scar tissue.
